When to Replace Your Master Cylinder

Replace your left master cylinder if you notice:

  • Brake fluid leaking from cylinder or reservoir
  • Spongy or soft brake lever feel (after bleeding)
  • Brake lever pulls all the way to grip without firm resistance
  • Visible corrosion or damage to cylinder body
  • Inconsistent or weak braking despite new pads/disk
  • Brake fluid level drops repeatedly (indicates internal seal failure)

Installation Guide

Tools Required:

  • 10mm, 12mm wrenches
  • Hex key set
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4)
  • Bleed kit or clear tubing
  • Clean rags

Installation Steps:

  1. Remove old master cylinder and disconnect brake line
  2. Clean handlebar mounting area thoroughly
  3. Position new master cylinder on left handlebar
  4. Secure with mounting clamp bolts (don't overtighten)
  5. Connect brake line to cylinder outlet port
  6. Fill reservoir with fresh brake fluid
  7. Bleed brake system completely (see bleeding procedure below)
  8. Check for leaks and test brake function
  9. Adjust brake lever position for comfort

Important: Proper bleeding is essential for brake function. If unsure, seek professional installation.

Brake Bleeding Procedure

  1. Fill master cylinder reservoir to MAX line
  2. Attach bleed tube to caliper bleed nipple
  3. Pump brake lever 3-4 times, hold pressure
  4. Open bleed nipple while holding lever
  5. Close nipple before releasing lever
  6. Repeat until no air bubbles appear in fluid
  7. Top up reservoir and secure cap
  8. Test brake lever for firm feel

Maintenance Tips

  • Check fluid level monthly - Top up if below MIN line
  • Inspect for leaks regularly - Around reservoir and fittings
  • Replace brake fluid annually - Prevents moisture buildup
  • Keep reservoir cap clean - Prevents contamination
  • Use only DOT 3 or DOT 4 - Never mix different fluid types
  • Avoid overfilling - Leave space for fluid expansion

Technical Notes

Left vs Right: The left master cylinder controls your REAR brake. This is standard configuration on OLA scooters. Do not confuse with right-side (front brake) master cylinder - they are not interchangeable.

Brake Fluid Safety:

  • Brake fluid is corrosive - avoid contact with paint and skin
  • Use in well-ventilated area
  • Store properly and dispose of old fluid responsibly
  • Keep away from children and pets

Safety Warning

⚠️ Critical Safety Component: The master cylinder is essential for brake system function. Improper installation or failure to bleed properly can result in complete brake failure. If you're not confident in your mechanical abilities, have this installed by a qualified technician. Always test brakes in a safe area before riding.
